Anthem Blue Cross is Reaching Out to Members to Obtain Dependent SSN’s for ACA Compliance

Anthem has been reaching out to Nevada members to collect Social Security numbers (SSNs) and comply with the Affordable Care Act (ACA or health care reform law). In some cases, Anthem Blue Cross is reaching out to Nevada businesses, if we need their employer identification number (EIN). Here are the latest efforts you should be aware of:

  • SSN collection (Late summer/early fall)
    Anthem Blue Cross will send letters to Nevada members if we do not have a SSN on file for them.
  • SSN and name reconciliation (beginning in early fall and continuing in response to IRS submissions)
    Anthem Blue Cross will mail a letter to members if their names and/or Social Security numbers do not match what the IRS has in its taxpayer database.
  • EIN collection (beginning late August)
    Anthem is reaching out to a small number of Nevada businesses, if they don’t have employer EIN’s. If you get this request from Anthem Blue Cross, the letter will give clear direction on what to do.

Please help Anthem Blue Cross keep data accurate for ACA reporting
It’s important that Anthem has accurate information on file for their customers. The IRS may impose penalties to individuals and companies who have not provided accurate information for reporting. Here are some tips to help make sure you comply with the IRS reporting requirements:

  • A member’s name and Social Security number should always be recorded exactly as they appear on their Social Security card.
  • Do not include any special characters (even periods (.), commas (,), hyphens (-) and ampersands (&) whenever completing this information:
    • Member name
    • SSN
    • Group name
    • EIN
    • Address
